Question: I read that fall is the best time to fertilize your lawn. My lawn looks good right now. Is it really necessary?
Answer: I normally fertilize my lawn just twice a year. I consider the fall application more important than the spring application. Anytime from now until the end of October is effective. Fall lawn fertilization will turn your lawn a darker green. It also keeps the grass green later in the fall and causes an earlier spring greenup. It allows you to wait until May to apply a spring fertilization. Then the spring application lasts through the summer if you use a fertilizer with part of the nitrogen in a coated long-lasting blend.
