“The History of Sound” is actually a decades-long portrait of Lionel, from 1910 when we meet him at 12, jumping to 1917 when Mescal appears as Lionel as the world war rages, to 1980 when Oscar-winner Chris Cooper becomes Lionel.

A precocious music student, Lionel meets O’Connor’s David at the Boston Conservatory where they share a deep love of folk music. Years later, at David’s urging, they travel through Maine to collect traditional songs. It’s here when they have a brief love affair.
