A former West Virginia congressman with a long history of suspected federal election law violations is back under ethics watchdog scrutiny, with allegations this time focusing on violations he may have committed since leaving office.
Former U.S. Rep. Alex Mooney, R-W.Va., who left office in January after 10 years in that role, may have violated federal law by failing to register as a lobbyist as required by the Lobbying Disclosure Act and ignoring a ban on former Congress members lobbying Congress members or congressional employees within one year of leaving office, according to the Campaign Legal Center, a Washington, D.C.-based ethics watchdog nonprofit.
