BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - The Brazos County Commissioners Court approved its budget for the 2026 fiscal year on Tuesday.

That budget maintained its property tax rate at the same level ($0.4197/$100 valuation) as last year’s budget. In August, the Court proposed a small increase to $0.423059/$100 valuation.

Acting Brazos County Court Judge Kyle Kacal says at the time of the proposed increase, the court’s commissioners were monitoring the ongoing legislative session in Austin.

We had appraisal litigations that gave us some uncertainty. We were looking at West Texas crude and looking at the entire community as a whole,“ said Kacal. ”Setting it at the VAR gave us the ability to go down."

Kacal said other county departments helped fund a pay increase by tightening their budgets in other areas.
