The White House said the Department of Homeland Security will investigate why Hugo Hernandez-Mendez, an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala, was released after United States Park Police arrested him for DUI back in April.
Hernandez-Mendez, 35, was charged with first- and second-degree murder in the killing of 19-year-old Dacara Thompson in Prince George’s County. Maryland State Police found Thompson’s body along a riverbank near Route 50 in Anne Arundel County on Aug. 31, a week after she was reported missing.
“As soon as we saw this case, we ensured that the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice were on it, and I can assure you that they are,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said
Leavitt said Hernandez-Mendez should have never been in the country.
