Manchester United's hopes of signing Crystal Palace and England midfielder Adam Wharton face being put on hold until next summer, according to reports.

Wharton is one of the most in-demand central midfielders after impressing at Selhurst Park. The former Blackburn Rovers ace has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford for about 12 months now.

United didn't improve their midfield in the summer despite a number of concerns. Instead, Ruben Amorim's men spent over £210million on three forward players and a possible new number one.

The rebuild at United is expected to continue in January and next summer. Alongside Brighton & Hove Albion's Carlos Baleba, Wharton is one of the Reds' long-term midfield targets, though P alace are understood to want a fee of £80m-£100m.
