Born on Sept. 10, 1935, Roger Maris didn't just play baseball as a teenager; he also played football, and met the girl who would become his wife at a high school basketball game. It took Roger Maris two days into his Major League Baseball career to hit his first home run with Cleveland--which may not seem too shocking, now. Maris played for four Major League Baseball teams over his career, Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Athletics, the New York Yankees, and the St. Louis Cardinals. He would make his claim to fame while with the Yankees, when he surpassed Babe Ruth's record of home runs in a single season with 61 homeruns in 1961. He passed away at the age of 51 on Dec. 14, 1985, after a battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
