BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) -- A new study shows the Red Stick Farmers Market is more than just a place to shop for fresh produce – it’s a vital economic, social, and cultural anchor for Louisiana.

Riverbend Research, with BREADA, found the market creates $6.8 million in yearly economic activity. This includes $1.8 million in household income and $543,000 in tax revenue.

With about 41 vendors, the market supports $3.7 million in vendor revenue. For many farmers, the market isn’t just a boost – it’s their livelihood. Almost half of the vendors said the market gives them at least half their income. One in four depends on it for 90% or more. Without it, about half said they might have to leave farming altogether.

The report also highlights the market’s role in expanding food access.
