Grafton House and Welbeck House date back to the 1800s and are 'synonymous with the character of West Bridgford', a councillor said

Two historic Nottinghamshire buildings will remain standing indefinitely after Rushcliffe Borough Council voted to make an order preventing their demolition permanent.

Grafton and Welbeck House, on the corner of Loughborough Road and Patrick Road in West Bridgford , date back to the 1800s and are two of the town’s most iconic buildings.

But the owners of both applied to knock them down and replace them with flats in 2024.

The council refused this application in March 2025, citing reasons such as a lack of ‘clear justification for the substantial harm’ to the buildings as well as the potential flats being ‘cramped and overintensive’.
