MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Gov. Tony Evers has ordered U.S. and Wisconsin flags to be flown at half-staff Thursday, Sept. 11 in honor of the lives lost in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Evers signed Executive Order #274, which also declares Thursday as a state Day of Service and Remembrance. Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the attacks. The governor encouraged Wisconsinites to honor the day through acts of service in their communities.

He said in a public statement, "As we reflect on that fateful day and how our nation was forever changed, we are also called upon to remember the spirit of unity and service that guided us in the days following to come together and help support each other during a time of great need.
