PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Another candidate has joined the race for the now vacant Ward 2 Providence City Council seat.

Democrat Matthew McDermott, self-described as a veteran pollster and Democratic strategist for progressive candidates and causes, has entered the race for the seat recently vacated by Helen Anthony.

McDermott also served as Co-Chair of the national LGBTQ+ Victory Fund Campaign Board and organized locally for the Kamala Harris/Tim Walz presidential ticket in 2024, according to his campaign website.

He is a native of Cranston, growing up in Pawtuxet Village.

Anthony stepped down from the council on September 1 in order to dedicate her full attention to her health .

Anthony was injured after being struck by a van in 2023 .
