The Pennsylvania Game Commission is asking the public to help with surveillance of a viral disease that’s often fatal to white-tailed deer.

Epizootic hemorrhagic disease, or EHD , has been confirmed this year in four northwestern Pennsylvania counties, commission officials said this week. Additional tests are pending on dead deer reported in southwestern and southeastern parts of the state.

EHD “has hit other parts of the country extremely hard this year,” the Game Commission said in a news release Tuesday . Neighboring Ohio reports deer deaths from hemorrhagic disease — caused by EHD or bluetongue virus — in 32 of 88 counties in 2024 .
