A judge has accepted a plea to manslaughter in a child abuse case that prompted an unprecedented public protest from Edmonton police — but sentencing for the accused has been delayed until later this year.

The girl’s loved ones wept as the her final moments were detailed by the Crown, and later marched out of the courtroom, chanting “no justice, no peace.”

Dozens packed the courtroom in Edmonton Wednesday to hear the case, a day after Edmonton police sent a letter to the provincial assistant deputy minister protesting the Crown’s decision to accept a plea from murder to manslaughter.
