EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEVV) — Evansville Police say they arrested a South Carolina man after he was spotted driving 101 MPH on the Lloyd Expressway.

An officer was parked on the shoulder of the Lloyd on Tuesday around 10 p.m. when they say they saw a gray Nissan Rogue speeding in the right lane.

EPD says the driver of the Nissan, identified as 37-year-old Joseph Mercuri, merged into the middle lane and quickly overtook the car that was in front of him in the right lane.

According to the officer, Mercuri was clocked at 101 MPH in the 50 MPH zone.

As the officer was about to go after Mercuri, they say they watched him rapidly decelerate and pull onto the shoulder.

As soon as the officer approached Mercuri's door, they say they could smell the odor of alcohol coming from inside.
