CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - In a one-on-one interview on Wednesday morning, N.C. Governor Josh Stein told WBTV he welcomed working with the legislature on bills that would address systemic gaps in the wake of the murder of a Ukrainian refugee on Charlotte’s light rail system.

Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old from Ukraine, was stabbed to death on August 22 on the Blue Line. State and federal prosecutors have charged DeCarlos Brown in her murder.

Video released by the Charlotte Area Transit System shows Zarutska being stabbed three times before dropping unconscious, including once in her throat.

The stabbing has stirred up backlash and numerous investigations from the Trump Administration who have accused Charlotte officials of being “soft on crime.”
