A 6-year-old boy who suffered life-threatening injuries last week when a minivan crashed into him at Harrisburg’s Kipona Festival has regained consciousness, his family announced.

After days in a coma with multiple broken bones, Faiz Sharif opened his eyes and was able to have his breathing tube removed, according to an update Tuesday posted on his family’s GoFundMe .

The fundraiser, created to help ease the burden of the Sharif family’s medical expenses, has raised more than $77,000 as of Wednesday morning.

Faiz has started to show “basic signs of awareness,” his family said. He suffered a broken pelvis, jaw and ribs, among other injuries, and had to undergo multiple emergency surgeries after the Sept. 1 crash on North Front Street.
