The New York Jets lost their season opener 34-32 to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Xavier Gipson had a costly fumble on a kick return in the fourth quarter.
After the Steelers scored a touchdown with 14:57 left in the game to cut their deficit to two points, Gipson put the ball on the ground on the next kickoff. The Steelers recovered and scored in two plays to take the lead. After the game, head coach Aaron Glenn noted that players will not be on the field if they turn the ball over. Just days later, the team released Gipson.
Gipson was an undrafted free agent who signed with the Jets before the 2023 season. He scored a game-winning 65-yard punt return touchdown to beat the Buffalo Bills in his NFL debut. He had been the primary return man for the Jets since 2023 and has over 1,700 total
