New York Attorney General Letitia James is intervening to counter Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s attempts to enforce Texas abortion laws in New York through a petition he filed against Ulster County Clerk Taylor Bruck.
“Texas has no authority in New York, and no power to impose its cruel abortion ban here,” James said in a Sept. 8 statement. “Our shield law exists to protect New Yorkers from out-of-state extremists, and New York will always stand strong as a safe haven for health care and freedom of choice.
In a Sep. 8 filing with Justice David M. Gandin in Ulster County Supreme Court, James asserted the statutory right of her office to intervene due to constitutional challenges to the state law.
