Prince Harry met with his father, King Charles III, for tea on Wednesday at Clarence House in London. This marks their first meeting in more than a year. The two have been estranged since Harry and his wife, Meghan, stepped back from royal duties and relocated to California in 2020, where they publicly shared grievances about the royal family.
Harry arrived at Clarence House after attending an event at the Centre for Blast Injury Studies at Imperial College London. His visit coincided with the third anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's death and included meetings with various charities he supports.
The last time Harry and Charles met was in February 2024, when Harry traveled to London after learning of his father's cancer diagnosis. During that visit, Harry spent approximately 45 minutes with Charles before the king left for his Sandringham estate to recover from treatment.
Harry has had limited contact with his brother, Prince William, the heir to the throne. His previous visit to London in April was overshadowed by a legal battle over police protection, which the Court of Appeal rejected. At that time, Charles was on a state visit to Italy, making a meeting impossible.
The legal case had strained relations, as it involved Harry criticizing the king's government. However, following the resolution of that case, Harry expressed a desire for reconciliation with his family. "There’s no point in continuing to fight anymore," he stated in a BBC interview. "Life is precious. I don’t know how much longer my father has."
Despite his olive branch, Harry has maintained a critical stance regarding the royal household's decisions. He expressed ongoing struggles to forgive the choice made in 2020 to withdraw his security, which he believes endangered his family. "What I’m struggling to forgive, and what I will probably always struggle to forgive, is the decision that was made in 2020 that affects my every single day and that is knowingly putting me and my family in harm’s way," he said.
Recent developments suggest a potential thaw in relations. In July, Harry's new communications team was seen conversing with a representative from the king's press office, indicating a shift in tone. This meeting, dubbed a "secret Harry peace summit" by a tabloid, would not have occurred without mutual consent from both parties.
