Why did Pascal Mubenga choose to leave a retirement of leisurely adventure and move more than 600 miles north to become Buffalo Public Schools' superintendent?

A new gig was far from his mind at his May 3, 2024, retirement party , which doubled as a book launch, at a Baptist church in North Carolina. Community members and colleagues from his 28 years as a math teacher, principal and superintendent stopped by to congratulate him on a career strewn with stories of academic turnaround.

The next 16 months were filled with multiple treks to Mubenga's native Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as ventures to France, Jamaica and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
