Daniel (Laurie Davidson) spends most of the new miniseries “The Girlfriend” torn between two women: His protective mom, Laura (Robin Wright), and his new girlfriend, Cherry (Olivia Cooke).

The six-episode series, based on a novel by Michelle Frances, follows the three main players in a dance. Laura is suspicious of Cherry from the start — and, it turns out, with reason. But the lengths she goes to in order to keep Cherry from her son are just as questionable and unforgivable.
