Several Sugar Land residents spoke out against the city's proposed property tax rate increase at a public hearing on Tuesday.

City staff have asked the council to approve a tax rate of $0.36321 per $100 of property valuation, a one-cent increase over last year.

Annual property taxes for the average Sugar Land home, with a value of $522,316, would increase by about $95, according to the city's budget office.

Some residents aren't happy about the proposed tax rate increase.

They said homeowners are already being crushed by rising home insurance rates and inflation — and that the city should take measures to reduce its costs.
