The person of interest taken into custody in relation to the shooting death of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk has been released and the shooter remains at large, according to FBI Director Kash Patel .

"The subject in custody has been released after an interrogation by law enforcement. Our investigation continues and we will continue to release information in interest of transparency," Patel wrote on his X account Thursday (September 10) evening.

A previous person of interest was taken into custody earlier in the day and was also released, Utah Valley University senior director of public relations Scott Trotter  later confirmed.
