MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — Georgia College and State University is investing more than $850,000 in campus security upgrades as colleges nationwide grapple with false active shooter calls and safety concerns following high-profile campus incidents.

The investment comes after a string of hoax emergency calls at campuses across Central Georgia and the country, as well as the February murder of University of Georgia student Laken Riley in Athens.

"You can no longer say well that will never happen here or we don't know anyone that happened to," Police Chief Wes Hardin said. "It happened right up the road in Athens, so that gave us a little bit more of a sense of urgency to make sure we were prepared."
