Jamie Smith Ellsworth, 82, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2025, surrounded by her husband and children. Born on Nov. 2, 1942, in Phoenix, Arizona, to Alden and Wilma Smith, she was their second child, their first having died at birth. Jamie was born two months premature and was an unlikely survivor for that period of time. As a result, she suffered chronic asthma for much of her life.

As a child, Jamie grew up primarily in Mesa, Arizona, but spent a few years in New Mexico while her father worked for the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory after the Second World War. During this time, she witnessed a test nuclear explosion in the deserts of Nevada.
