CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The deadly stabbing of Iryna Zarutska on Charlotte’s Blue Line has sparked outrage, with critics questioning how the suspect , who has a long criminal history, was out of jail at the time.

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles called the attack a “tragic failure by the courts and magistrates,” saying more must be done to ensure repeat offenders face consequences.

Mecklenburg County District Attorney Spencer Merriweather said while he cannot speak directly about the case, he acknowledges broader challenges within the justice system, particularly when it comes to mental health and resources.
