Carnegie Mellon students are taking to the university’s most visible structure of free speech to honor the life of Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist who was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon at a college campus in Utah.
Students with the College Republicans chapter planned to paint a message celebrating Mr. Kirk on the Fence, a CMU landmark that students can paint to express any viewpoint or message.
Wednesday evening, the students were “holding” the Fence until midnight, when under Fence tradition the structure can be repainted.
Mr. Kirk’s death is a “devastating loss,” said Anthony Cacciato, a CMU senior and president of the College Republicans.
