PHOENIX — For decades, neighbors in a North Phoenix community have been able to step outside their homes and see ancient carvings on boulders—until now.
O’Halloran lives just steps away from the north side of Moon Mountain, a peak within the Phoenix Mountains Preserve. Walking down the path, she said she'd find at least half a dozen boulders with petroglyphs.
"My husband and I come out here every afternoon, evening, we walk our dogs out here,” she said, recalling the times they'd question who created the petroglyphs and what they meant.
The carvings are believed to be linked to the Hohokam people and are similar to those at the Greenway Road and 17th Avenue Petroglyph Site. The city of Phoenix Archaeology Office estimates those carvings date back 700 to 1,000 years.
