HMRC has increased the personal tax-free allowance for individuals to over £13,000 , allowing households to earn more before paying income tax.

Under the Marriage Allowance perk, one of you must earn less than £12,570 (so, not paying income tax at all). The other must earn between £12,570 and £50,270 (a basic-rate taxpayer).

If you qualify, the lower-earning partner can transfer £1,260 of their unused Personal Allowance to their partner. That cuts the higher earner’s tax bill by £252 a year (which is 20% of £1,260). You can backdate your claim up to four years.
