South Australia's chief public health officer has tried to clear up confusion around key warnings during the state's algae outbreak.

Nicola Spurrier today advised that asthmatics could visit beaches impacted by the toxic algal bloom as long as they take their medication.

"Carry your reliever with you, make sure you've got your asthma action plan up to date," she said.

But that contradicts the advice from Asthma Australia, which says people with respiratory problems should "avoid beaches during algal blooms".

"I appreciate this is confusing for everyone, to be going through an algal bloom for the first time," Deputy Premier Susan Close said.

SA Health is standing by its advice, but is promising to discuss the issue with Asthma Australia.
