Once upon a time, all the attention was on the big four fashion weeks: New York, London, Milan and Paris – where bi-annual runway collections would dictate the form and flavour of the seasons ahead. But at the turn of the Millennium, something shifted, and we saw new cities added to the fashion week calendar: from Stockholm and Tokyo in 2005 to Copenhagen in 2006 and Berlin in 2007.
Tokyo might be relatively new to the fashion week scene, but Japan’s contribution to the fashion hall of fame is undeniable, with visionaries such as Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo, Junya Watanabe and Yohji Yamamoto setting the standard for a new generation of design talent.
