PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Sean Astin, who starred in the iconic Oregon-made film 'The Goonies' 40 years ago, reached a career milestone in becoming the new president of SAG-AFTRA.
On Friday, Astin was elected by the union which represents tens of thousands of actors and other entertainment and media professionals, succeeding Fran Drescher in the position.
Astin comes from a Hollywood background, as he is the son of the late Academy Award-winning actress Patty Duke and John Astin, who starred in the 1960s TV series “The Addams Family.” Duke also served as the Screen Actors Guild’s president from 1985-1988.
Also widely known for his role as loyal hobbit companion Samwise Gamgee in the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy, Astin has made appearances in TV's "Stranger Things," "Rudy" and others.
