THAMESVILLE – A public art initiative continues to grow across Chatham-Kent with the unveiling of a War of 1812-themed wooden sculpture here on Saturday.
World-renowned chainsaw carver Mike Winia said The Battle of Thames, a conflict that took part along the Thames River near Thamesville during the War of 1812, is the inspiration for the carving.

Having hunted for treasures in the area, the Bothwell resident said he has cannonballs from the War of 1812 that have come from the banks of the Thames River.
Winia said that gave him the inspiration of the cannonball and broken boat that make up part of the carving.
“It’s collaboration with the community,” he said.
Winia said local input received indicated a preference for a dry river bed theme.
