IONIA COUNTY, Mich. — Nine inmates were taken from the Ionia County Jail to area hospitals for evaluation after a carbon monoxide buildup early Saturday morning, the Ionia County Sheriff's Office (ICSO) said.
Deputies said the Ionia County Jail had a carbon monoxide buildup from a malfunctioning boiler, and due to the malfunction, there were inmates in a nearby unit who experienced headaches and nausea.
The Ionia Department of Public Safety helped find the leak and it was isolated by facility maintenance.
Ionia County Jail staff removed the inmates from the affected units and got them to fresh air. No staff members reported any illness.
Deputies said nine inmates were taken to area hospitals to be evaluated and are expected to make full recoveries. ICSO said the inmates will be returne
