Fresh off its first bye week of the season, Notre Dame football found itself in a critical situation for its College Football Playoff resume and aspirations in Week 3.
Unfortunately for Marcus Freeman and the No. 8-ranked Fighting Irish, they were unable to rise to the challenge, falling in a heartbreaking home loss to Mike Elko and No. 17 Texas A&M. The Aggies were able to take advantage of several late-game miscues to come away with a 41-40 win in the game's waning seconds.

Final score: Texas A&M 41, Notre Dame 40
Texas A&M defeats Notre Dame
Texas A&M picks up its first signature win of the season thanks to Marcel Reed's 11-yard touchdown pass to Nate Boerkircher fourth-and-11 to defeat No. 8 Notre Dame 41-40 at Notre Dame Stadium. It's the second time in Marcus Freeman's tenure in South Bend that Notre Dame will start 0-2 on the season.
Texas A&M takes lead over Notre Dame
With the game on the line, Nate Boerkircher comes up with the go-ahead 11-yard touchdown catch on fourth-and-11 to give Texas A&M the 41-40 lead over Notre Dame.
Notre Dame will get the ball back with 13 seconds remaining. A costly extra-point miscue by the Fighting Irish could result in a second straight loss for Marcus Freeman's squad.
Notre Dame retakes lead
Jeremiyah Love breaks off for a 12-yard rushing touchdown to give Notre Dame a 40-34 lead over Texas A&M late in the fourth quarter. The Irish then have a miscue on their extra-point attempt with the hold of the snap by the place holder and it keeps the game at six-point lead for Notre Dame.
Seconds later on the kickoff return, Texas A&M had a touchdown return brought back due to a holding penalty. Notre Dame keeps its 40-34 lead with 2:41 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Notre Dame converts fourth-down play
Notre Dame goes for it on fourth-and-1 and it pays off for the Fighting Irish as Jeremiyah Love takes the gap for a 6-yard carry and the first down.
Texas A&M ties game with field goal
Texas A&M ties the game at 34-34 with a 45-yard field goal from Randy Bond. That's a nice job by Notre Dame's defense to bounce back on the drive and hold Texas A&M to just a field goal after giving up a 12-yard carry to Le'Veon Moss on third-and-12.
Notre Dame's Adon Shuler called for targeting
Notre Dame's Adon Shuler was called for targeting in the fourth quarter after putting a hit on Texas A&M's Marcel Reed that sent the Aggies quarterback to the medical tent briefly. Shuler was not called for targeting before the injury timeout on the field while Reed was being tended to, but officials called him for it after their review.
Notre Dame retakes lead with field goal
Notre Dame can't capitalize on its trip to the red zone, so it settles for three and a 39-yard field goal from Noah Burnette to retake the lead at the start of the fourth quarter.
Third quarter: Notre Dame 31, Texas A&M 31
Notre Dame tied with Texas A&M after three quarters
Fours up in South Bend as Notre Dame and Texas A&M go into the fourth quarter all knotted up at 31-31. The Irish are moving on offense as Jadarian Price got Notre Dame into Texas A&M's red zone as time expired in the third quarter with an 11-yard carry.
Both teams looking for a signature win to their season in the next 15 minutes.
Texas A&M ties game with field goal
Notre Dame holds Texas A&M to three points on its drive, as Randy Bond hits the 43-yard field goal to tie the game at 31-31 just before the end of the third quarter.

Texas A&M with huge fourth-down stop
Notre Dame goes for it on fourth-and-1, but Daymion Sanford stuffs Jeremiyah Love behind the line of scrimmage to give possession back to Texas A&M.
It's a huge play for the Aggies, who need some momentum in the second half.
Notre Dame takes lead
Jadarian Price gives Notre Dame a 31-28 lead after rushing for a 17-yard touchdown with 8:17 left in the third quarter.
The Fighting Irish's special teams leads their offense to a touchdown.
Notre Dame with great field position after Texas A&M punt
Texas A&M gains zero yards after being pinned on the 1-yard line, and Notre Dame takes over with fantastic field position on the Aggies' 28-yard line after the 20-yard return by Jordan Faison.
Notre Dame punts
A rare punt starts off the second half, as Texas A&M holds Notre Dame on the opening drive of the third quarter. The Aggies will take over on their own 1-yard line, however, after James Rendell's 47-yard punt was downed deep inside Texas A&M territory.
First half: Texas A&M 28, Notre Dame 24
Texas A&M leads Notre Dame at halftime
Texas A&M heads into the locker room at halftime leading Notre Dame 28-24. The Aggies attempted to extend their lead just before halftime after getting the ball back following another miscue by Notre Dame, but Texas A&M kicker Randy Bond's kick sails wide left.
Just before halftime, Texas A&M safety Bryce Anderson went down with an injury that resulted him in being stretchered off the field.
Texas A&M takes lead over Notre Dame
Le'Veon Moss punches it in from the 1-yard line to give Texas A&M its first lead of the night against Notre Dame. It's the third touchdown of the night for Moss, and the third touchdown of the quarter for the Aggies.
That's a huge last four minutes and drive for Texas A&M, as the Aggies capitalized on their takeaway — Scooby Williams' interception against CJ Carr — for a touchdown to go into halftime with a lead instead of allowing Notre Dame to have an opportunity to extend its lead and then get the ball back to start the second half.
Texas A&M picks off CJ Carr
CJ Carr's first mistake of the night results in Texas A&M's first takeaway of the game as Scooby Williams picks off Carr at the 50-yard line. The Aggies get the ball back with just over three minutes remaining until halftime with an opportunity to take a lead going into the locker room.
Texas A&M cuts deficit with touchdown
Le'Veon Moss scores his second rushing touchdown of the night, this time from 2 yards out to bring Notre Dame's lead back to three points at 24-21. It's the fifth multi-touchdown game of his career.
Notre Dame's Leonard Moore nearly had an interception on second-and-goal but he swatted Marcel Reed's pass intended for KC Concepcion down instead. The scoring drive was nine plays for 75 yards and took over four minutes off of the game clock.
Jeremiyah Love makes one-handed touchdown catch
OKAY Jeremiyah Love!
The Notre Dame running back is left open on the right side of the field and connects with CJ Carr for a 36-yard reception touchdown. It's a nice job by Carr to take the easy play given by Texas A&M's defense while Love made a one-handed catch to reel in the thrown from Carr after a brief bobble.
The scoring drive was six-plays for 75 yards and took 2:40 off the game clock. Notre Dame is back out to a 10-point lead over Texas A&M at 24-14.
Le'Veon Moss cuts Notre Dame lead with touchdown
Le'Veon Moss punches it in from the Notre Dame 1-yard line to bring Texas A&M within three of the Fighting Irish. KC Concepcion was a big part of the Aggies' drive that went five plays for 75 yards, as the Texas A&M wide receiver beat Notre Dame freshman safety Mark Zackery for catches of 16 and 45 yards on back-to-back plays, respectively.
It's 17-14 Notre Dame with 12:23 remaining in the second quarter.
Notre Dame extends lead with field goal
Notre Dame extends its lead over Texas A&M with a 22-yard field goal from Noah Burnette. Texas A&M cornerback Will Lee III came up with a big play for the Aggies on third-and-4 as he broke up Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr's pass intended for Malachi Fields.
The Irish started their third drive of the night in plus territory after Leonard Moore intercepted Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed at the Aggies 19-yard line. It was an 11-play drive for Notre Dame that went 38 yards and took 5:58 off the game clock.
First quarter: Notre Dame 14, Texas A&M 7
Notre Dame leads Texas A&M after first quarter
Notre Dame takes a 14-7 lead over Texas A&M into the second quarter at Notre Dame Stadium. The Irish are knocking on the door of getting their second touchdown of the night, as they will open the second quarter with second-and-goal from the Texas A&M 2-yard line.
Mike Elko throws chair on Texas A&M sideline
NBC's camera caught Texas A&M coach Mike Elko not thrilled while talking to his defense after the Aggies' second defensive series of the night, which included an unnecessary roughness penalty and giving up 43-yard flea flicker down the sideline.
After talking with his players on the sidelines, Elko was seen throwing a chair away.
Le'Veon Moss injury update
Texas A&M lead running back Le'Veon Moss is not back on the field as the Aggies head back out after Notre Dame's touchdown. NBC's Kathryn Tappen reported that Moss was seen throwing up on the Texas A&M sideline and was in the medical tent.
Notre Dame retakes lead
Jadarian Price puts Notre Dame back in front of Texas A&M with a 7-yard rushing touchdown. Texas A&M set the Notre Dame score up by giving up a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty from Dezz Ricks on a late hit out of bounds and a 43-yard reception from CJ Carr to Eli Raridon.
The scoring drive for the Irish was seven plays for 75 yards and took 3:03 off the game clock.
Texas A&M ties game on 86-yard touchdown
And just like that, Texas A&M is back in this one!
On second-and-6, Marcel Reed finds Mario Craver on the wheel route along the left sideline for an 86-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7-7 in the first quarter. It's a really nice throw by Reed but an even more impressive play by Craver, who beat several members of Notre Dame's defense to find his way to the back of the end zone.
Poor tackling by Notre Dame leads to Craver's second explosive touchdown of the season.
Texas A&M gets stop
Texas A&M gets the stop on third-and-1 as DJ Hicks is all over the coverage and tackles Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love for a loss of 5 yards. It's a nice bounce back by the Aggies defense after giving up big back-to-back runs on the series.
Notre Dame blocks punt, scores touchdown
A mistake on special teams comes to hurt Texas A&M, as Notre Dame opens up the game with a blocked punt touchdown. Notre Dame's Loghan Thomas got hands on Aggies punter Tyler White's punt attempt while Tae Johnson recovered the deflection for a 24-yard scoop-and-score touchdown.
It's not the start Mike Elko and Co. intended for in this one, especially on the road in a hostile environment like Notre Dame Stadium. The Aggies go back to the drawing board as Marcel Reed heads back onto the field facing a 7-0 deficit.
Notre Dame wins toss, Texas A&M up first
Notre Dame has won the coin toss and elected to defer the kickoff to the second half. That means it will be Texas A&M and Marcel Reed on offense first in South Bend. Almost time for football at Notre Dame Stadium!
