MONROE, La. (KNOE) - On September 13, 1814 British forces bombarded Fort McHenry during the War of 1812.

American lawyer, author and amateur poet Francis Scott Key watched from a distance.

As the sun rose that morning, Key was inspired by the sight of a huge American flag still flying at dawn. He wrote a poem called “Defence of Fort M’Henry”.

Later it was set to music. In 1931, Congress officially made it America’s National Anthem.
