WASHINGTON, D.C. — Twenty years after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the emotional and political aftershocks continue to ripple through American society, according to a Pew Research Center report done in 2021 that is now being brought to light .
The study, based on two decades of public opinion data, reveals that while the initial unity and patriotism following the attacks were profound, many of those sentiments faded over time. In the immediate aftermath, 71% of Americans reported feeling depressed, and nearly half struggled to concentrate. Yet 63% said they could not stop watching the news coverage.
Support for military action was overwhelming in the early days. According to the report by the nonpartisan research group, in mid-September 2001, 77% of Americans backed deploying ground fo
