TOKYO :Norwegian former Olympic 1,500 metres champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen failed to advance to the world championship semi-finals on Sunday after trailing in eighth in his heat on the back of an injury-hit preparation.

Ingebrigtsen, beaten into silver in the last two world finals, never looked his usual confident self and, as the pack surged coming into the final straight in the stadium where he won his Olympic gold in 2021, he was unable to respond as only the first six progressed.

The 24-year-old, whose build-up was hit by an Achilles injury but who still hopes he will be in shape to bid for a third successive world 5,000m title.
