Motorists across the UK are being warned to stay alert after a "surge" in fake parking fine texts sweeping the country. Fraudsters are bombarding drivers with convincing messages that claim to be from councils and parking operators, demanding instant payment for so-called penalties.

That's according to Cherie Carter, director at Indigo Car Hire , who has issued four steps every driver should take to stay safe:

Never click payment links in texts. Always check your council website directly.

Scrutinise the wording. Councils will not send a text demanding instant payment.

Check the sender details. Scam texts often come from random mobile numbers.

Call your council if you are unsure. Verify the fine before paying a penny.
