TOKYO (Reuters) -Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya won the gold medal for women’s marathon at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Sunday, clocking two hours, 24 minutes and 43 seconds in a thrilling last-minute spurt that edged her past Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa, who took silver.
Julia Paternain took bronze to give Uruguay its first-ever medal at the worlds.
