GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas — Thomas Simpson said he’s grateful to be alive after what happened at his Grand Prairie home on the 3000 block of Holly Hill Drive early Friday morning.

“Gratitude is in my heart today," Simpson said. "I’m grateful everyone is alive."

Around 1:45 a.m., Simpson said his dogs began barking aggressively. When he went to check, he saw two sets of legs outside in his driveway.

“I raised my pistol. I don’t know who it is, I’m assuming it’s criminals, car thieves, whatever,” Simpson explained.

It was actually Grand Prairie police officers.

As soon as Simpson realized, he said he dropped his weapon. Moments later, he said officers opened fire, hitting him in the leg.

Simpson said his wife and family were still inside the home as bullets flew.
