ERNEST Hausmann was ripped away from his family at age three and put up for adoption.

His parents in Uganda were diagnosed with AIDS and not expected to live.

Hausmann was the youngest of 23 siblings and adopted by an American family.

The college football linebacker for Michigan moved to Columbus, Nebraska at age five.

He struggled initially with American life and being torn away from his family.

"Why couldn't I have lived my life with my family," he said in a feature on ESPN College Gameday.

"I feel I could never communicate my emotions with anybody.

"When I came to America it was the best day of their life (his adopted parents'), but it was the worst day of my life.

"That's when it hit me that I might never go home.
