HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) -- An investigation is underway following the death of an inmate who was transported from the Vanderburgh County Jail to a local hospital on September 6.

According to the sheriff's office, the incident occurred in the evening in a booking area containing multiple new arrestees. Within minutes of being placed into the cell, the inmate improvised a ligature device and applied it to their neck without the other cell occupants noticing.

The sheriff's office says jail officers and medical staff initiated lifesaving care. The inmate was then transported to the hospital, admitted to intensive care, and later removed from life support on September 12.
