Max Domi will have the opportunity of a hockey lifetime when the Maple Leafs begin training camp on Thursday.
This is already Domi’s 11th season in the National Hockey League but he’s never started a camp on the definitive first line of a contending NHL team.
He will enter camp as the right winger with Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies — the choice place to be on the Leafs when the season begins.
The question now is: Can he do it? And, for how long can he do it?
The Leafs believe he can. They need him to focus more. They need him to worry less about the emotional part of their game — fighting and protecting teammates — and more about using his speed and passing skills to get Matthews and Knies the puck.
