Research out of an American university suggests that U.S. meat-eaters are unknowingly chowing down on endangered animals, including sharks.

A study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill included DNA research on products labelled as shark meat sold at local grocery stores.

According to the U.K. Daily Mail , more than nine in 10 tested samples were labelled “shark” without any additional information on the specific species.

Nearly one in three were actually meat from endangered or critically endangered shark species, per the Daily Mail .
