TRUCKEE, Calif. (KOLO) - The Truckee Police Department is issuing a warning about the increasingly growing threat of imposter scams.

An imposter scam is when someone pretends to be someone they’re not to get you to give them money, access to financial accounts, or personal information.

Scammers may claim to be from a business you know or a government agency or both.

“Never pay anyone who insists you pay with cryptocurrency, a wire transfer, or a gift card,” according to the Truckee Police Department. “That’s how scammers want you to pay.”

Legitimate government entities or private business do not unexpectedly demand money over the phone, or online, using these transaction methods.
