The Baldwin County Correctional Center has once again been approved as a facility for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) inmates.

After 13 years with a contract between the county and the U.S. Marshal's Service, ICE notified the sheriff in February that he could no longer house immigrant detainees due to regulations, including a required recreational yard. Lowery said at the time that it was proof that illegal immigrants have more rights than U.S. citizens behind bars.

Lowery said there were previously 10 pages of regulations for ICE detainees before and Washington decreased those to three pages.

Since February, suspected illegal immigrants had to be transported to Mississippi and Louisiana for ICE holds.
