Detroit now holds the unflattering and consequential distinction of being the nation’s highest poverty city for a population of more than half a million people. The latest report from the U.S. Census Bureau exposes the fallacy among some that more has been done to address poverty and inequality in Detroit under Mayor Mike Duggan’s tenure.

Simply put, the city’s poverty numbers , now at 34.5% as of last year and the highest in Detroit since 2017, are not only unacceptable, but should also summon the conscience of Duggan and his administration to hunker down and do more to meet the everyday economic challenges thousands of families in this city are facing.
