NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Four months after a wave of immigration enforcement operations shook South Nashville’s Hispanic community, the start of Hispanic Heritage Month is being marked with renewed purpose and emotion.

Plaza Mariachi, often seen as the heart of South Nashville’s Hispanic community, once again hosted its Fiestas Patrias Celebration, marking the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15.

For many, the annual tradition feels especially significant this year.

“These types of events break down barriers,” said Diane Janbakhsh, owner of Plaza Mariachi. “They show others—who may not be Hispanic by blood—that they can enjoy and celebrate the culture too.”

Janbakhsh said the events offer a safe space where community members can feel connected
