New York Governor Kathy Hochul officially endorsed Zohran Mamdani for mayor of New York City on Sunday night. In an opinion piece published in the New York Times, Hochul expressed her confidence in Mamdani's ability to lead the city through its current challenges. She stated, "I am confident that he has the courage, urgency, and optimism New York City needs to lead it through the challenges of this moment."
Hochul highlighted her discussions with Mamdani, noting that while they have had disagreements, they share a commitment to ensuring safety for children and making the city more affordable. "I heard a leader who is focused on making New York City affordable — a goal I enthusiastically support," she wrote.
The governor emphasized the importance of having a mayor who would not yield to former President Donald Trump. "Zohran Mamdani and I will both be fearless in confronting the president's extreme agenda — with urgency, conviction, and the defiance that defines New York," Hochul said. She added that she would always reserve the right to disagree with Mamdani but believes in standing united against divisive forces.
Hochul's endorsement comes after Mamdani's victory in the Democratic primary in June. His main opponents in the upcoming mayoral race include incumbent Mayor Eric Adams and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, both of whom are running as independents. Mamdani's policy proposals may require support from Hochul and the state legislature for funding.
Senator Chris Van Hollen criticized New York's Democratic lawmakers for not endorsing Mamdani sooner, calling their hesitance "spineless politics." He urged them to support Mamdani immediately. Other prominent Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have yet to endorse a candidate.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist, has recently distanced himself from some of his past statements that his opponents deemed extreme. He expressed regret for labeling the New York Police Department as "racist" in a 2020 social media post. In response to Hochul's endorsement, Mamdani stated he looks forward to collaborating with her to continue her efforts in making life more affordable for New Yorkers. He praised her for standing up to Trump and expanding access to childcare.
Political analysts note that Hochul's endorsement is a politically risky move as she prepares for her re-election campaign next year. Some of her supporters may not agree with her backing of Mamdani, who has faced criticism from various quarters. Hochul has previously distanced herself from Cuomo following his resignation amid sexual harassment allegations.
As the mayoral race heats up, the dynamics between Mamdani, Hochul, and the other candidates will be closely watched, particularly regarding voter sentiment among different demographic groups.
